Youth Sailing

Home School Sailing

Weekday learn-to-sail sessions for ages 8 to 13, designed around homeschool schedules.

About the Program

School on the Water

The RCYC Home School Sailing program runs Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9am to noon, designed specifically around homeschool families' flexible schedules. Students ages 8–13 (under 100 lbs) receive focused instruction in Optimist Dinghies under certified coaches in small groups.

This is experiential education at its best. Sailing teaches physics, meteorology, decision-making, and teamwork in a way no classroom can replicate. Each session builds on the last, and by the end students can rig, launch, and sail independently.

What Students Take Away

Physics in Motion

How wind angle, sail trim, and hull shape translate directly into speed. Every tack is a live experiment.

Decision-Making

Reading conditions, choosing a course, and adapting when the wind shifts. Sailing builds judgment.

Equipment Responsibility

Rigging, caring for, and storing a boat. Students leave with a respect for gear and the habit of preparation.

Teamwork

Communication on the water is immediate and honest. Crews learn to work together under real conditions.
