About the Boat
The Collegiate Standard
The Flying Junior has been the predominant two-person dinghy for high school and collegiate sailing in the United States for decades. Designed by Uffa Fox in 1956 as a junior companion to the Flying Dutchman, the FJ balances performance and approachability: fast enough to be exciting, forgiving enough to develop skills quickly.
With a fractional sloop rig, centerboard, and optional asymmetric spinnaker, the FJ rewards precise boat handling and teamwork. It is the boat of choice for ISSA high school regattas.
Our Fleet
Saved From the Sea Star Base
RCYC's 16 FJs were acquired following the closure of Sea Star Base, Galveston, preserving a complete, well-maintained one-design fleet that would otherwise have been dispersed. Rather than let these boats disappear from sailing, the club brought them to Lake Ray Hubbard and put them to work.
The fleet is club-owned and club-maintained. Sailors show up; the boats, sails, and rigging are all provided. This model makes RCYC an ideal neutral host site for high school invitational and collegiate team racing regattas, where visiting teams need a guaranteed one-design fleet without the logistics of trailering their own boats.

Regattas on Lake Ray Hubbard with fleet racing and team racing divisions. RCYC provides the FJs; visiting teams bring their crews.
Collegiate Team Racing
Eligible host site with 16 identical FJs available. Lake Ray Hubbard offers consistent breeze and flat water ideal for team racing formats.
Learn-to-Race Clinics
FJ clinics for RCYC members and area sailors new to two-person dinghy racing. Club coaches and experienced racers lead sessions on starts, tactics, and boat handling.
