Instruction in Optimist Dinghies and Club 420s for ages 7 to 17. Builds the skills to join the race team.
About the Program
From Dock to Race Course
Beginner Sailing is for ages 7 to 17 who have completed at least one week of summer camp and want to take their skills further. Instruction runs in small groups in Optimist Dinghies and Club 420s, with certified coaches on the water every session.
The program covers everything from rigging and sail trim to starting a race and rounding marks. Sailors who complete beginner sailing are ready to join the RCYC race team.

What They Learn
Rigging
Setting up and breaking down a boat correctly. The habit every sailor builds first.
Points of Sail
Wind direction, sail trim, and how to make the boat go where you want it to go.
Maneuvering
Tacking, jibing, docking, and capsize recovery — the core toolkit of boat handling.
Race Basics
Starting a race, going around a course, and understanding the right-of-way rules.
Boat Care
Responsibility for equipment, post-sail rinse and storage, and teamwork on the dock.
Safety
Water confidence, self-rescue, reading conditions, and knowing when to reef.
Spring 2026 Schedule

Sessions run March through May. Group and private lessons available. Prerequisite: one completed week of summer camp or equivalent experience.
